AI-Native Accounting & Bookkeeping — Sourcing List
- Puzzle — AI-native general ledger built for startups, with real-time accrual accounting. Fits: founded by ex-Ramp/Stripe talent (Sasha Orloff, ex-LendUp), raised from Sequoia; directly rebuilding the ledger rather than layering on QuickBooks.
- Digits — AI accounting platform automating bookkeeping, reporting, and analysis for SMBs. Fits: raised ~$97M (Benchmark, GV), pivoted from analytics layer to full AI general ledger — a bet that the ledger itself gets rebuilt.
- Basis — AI agents that perform accounting workflows (reconciliation, journal entries) for accounting firms. Fits: raised a $34M Series A led by Khosla in late 2024; sells agents to accountants rather than around them — strong early traction with mid-size firms.
- Truewind — AI-powered bookkeeping and finance back office for startups. Fits: YC W23, genuinely early stage, combines LLM-driven categorization with human review; targeting the concierge-bookkeeping gap left by Bench/Pilot.
- Klarity — AI for document review in accounting workflows (revenue recognition, order forms). Fits: raised $70M Series B (2024); attacks a painful, audit-adjacent niche legacy suites ignore.
- Black Ore — AI tax preparation automation for CPA firms (Tax Autopilot). Fits: emerged from stealth in 2024 with ~$60M from a16z and Oak HC/FT; tax prep is the most labor-constrained corner of accounting.
- Kick — self-driving bookkeeping for solopreneurs and small businesses. Fits: raised ~$9M seed (2024) with backing from OpenAI's startup fund; targets the massive underserved sub-QuickBooks segment.
- Numeric — AI-powered close management and accounting operations for in-house teams. Fits: $28M Series A (Menlo, 2024); wedge into the month-end close, the workflow legacy ERPs handle worst.
- Fondo — accounting, tax, and R&D credits for startups, increasingly AI-automated. Fits: YC-backed, early stage, strong distribution within the YC/startup ecosystem; TaxPass product shows productization of what's usually a service.
- Doola — bookkeeping + formation + tax for global founders forming US entities. Fits: early stage, backed by Nexus/HubSpot Ventures; captures customers at company inception, before they ever touch QuickBooks.
(Caveat: stages/round sizes are as of my knowledge cutoff — verify current status.)

White-space gaps
- AI-native audit. Nearly all activity clusters in bookkeeping, close, and tax prep — but external audit is a $200B+ market run on decades-old sampling methodology, with a severe talent shortage at the Big 4 and below. Very few credible AI-native audit challengers exist (regulatory moats are the excuse, but also the prize).
- Multi-entity / international consolidation for SMBs. The startups above serve single-entity US companies; legacy tools (NetSuite, Sage) own multi-entity, multi-currency consolidation. Global-first small companies (increasingly common via remote work and entity products like doola) have no AI-native ledger that handles cross-border consolidation, transfer pricing, and local GAAP mapping — a natural next wedge.
